Agreed.
I feel that Wicca as a whole has done major work (and I wholeheartedly applaud) to bring alternative belief systems out in the open and helped such systems gain greater acceptance in general. This is a good thing, it has given all modern alternataive belief systems more freedom to live our lives the way we have a right to.
However, with the publicity Wicca has brought, there has been a public tendency to generalize Wicca and witchcraft into "one and the same thing". But they are not. Humans have a tendency to "lump" things together that way cognitively if they hear two terms together often enough that are never discussed separately on their own merits. Thus, many just don't realize that Wicca and witchcraft can be, and are by many, practiced separately. Of even greater import, many do not realize that witchcraft is practiced quite actively by many Christians, because the publicity generated by Wiccan efforts to gain acceptance has created an impression that witchcraft is a religion rather than a practice, and the "reasoning" goes that one cannot be a witch and a Christian at the same time if they are both religions. This just is not true, since witchcraft is not a religion.
However, judging from the replies to this question, there *are* some who do know the difference. Therefore, not "all" people believe witchcraft and Wicca to be one and the same thing. This is encouraging.

Thank the modern Media and Bad horror films. To the Layman, Wicca and Witchcraft are Synonimous.
Lemme set this straight Wicca is a Religion either Re-discovered or created by Gerald Gardner out of elements of indiginous European religions and a smattering of ceremonial magick. Whereas a Witch is a person who practices Magick who works with the natural flows to create change in reality with the Will. Many work with Ancestral or Nature spirits. Not all Witches are Wiccan neither are all Wiccans, Witches. Just as not All Jews are Cabbalists or all Buddhist are monks. I am a Witch but I am also an Asatruar. I worship the Gods of My Germanic ancestors, but even I f Didn't I would still be a Witch.

Yes i believe in you.For others those who dont' know difference between witch and wiccca.---------
Witch: A practitioner of Witchcraft. This usually means an individual who practices ritualized magic of some sort. They may or may not be a Wiccan.
Wiccan: A follower of the Wicca religion. There are many different paths within what is now called Wicca. Not all paths will practice ritualized magic of some sort, so not all Wiccans are Witches, although many are.

It is due to movies. All movies refer to any witches as wiccan. I guess they know that people will not understand it anyway, and what person is going to take the time to look it up. I guess it is just easier to label something in a simple way. Of course, it is far more complex than that. Look at how people generalize religions, professions, and addictions. It is because people do not take the time to do the research.

To be a witch does not mean you have to identify as wiccan. Most true witches would tell you their belief system is very spiritual, and very nature oriented. Just as there are many branches of christianity (methodist, baptist etc) there are many different ways witches chose to practice.

Are you a Christian witch? I know some who are. But other than those I have never know a witch that was not pagan. I too am a witch, but I believe in many Goddesses and Gods. I am a Pecti-Witan by denomination.

A Witch may not be a Wiccan, may not be a Herbalist, may not be a Dowser, may not be a Caller of Animals, may not be a Healer, May not be a Witch.
I could stuff a lot more in to the loop, but it's almost midnight and I'm about ready to turn into a rhubarb pie.

The first answer should give you some insight. "I heard..." And that's what people base their opinions on. They "heard" that Pagans don't believe in God. They "heard" that witches sacrifice babies to the devil. They "heard" all sorts of bull from somebody who heard it from somebody else. But nobody bothers to verify it all, any more than they did during the Burning Times. We "heard" that Catholic priests abuse altar boys. Does that make all of them bad? You're free to believe in as many or as few Gods as you wish. The way I see it, having many just increases the odds!
