The car is in my name and my boyfriend has no right to it. He paid alot of the bills that needed to be paid to fix the car but his name is not ont he car. Anyway, we broke up and now he wants me to pay him all the money back, but well I can't, he says that I need to pay him or he will take out a lien on my car. Can he do this and what rights do I have?

Only the mechanic who is owed money for fixing the car can take out a lien on it ("mechanic's lien"). If the mechanic was already paid that is the end of the lien possibility. It sounds like your ex bf outsmarted himself. Don't let him bluff you into paying.

No...he has no lien rights to the car. There are limited ways a person can have a lien...and a person who helps pay for maintenence is not one of them. The best he can do is use you and try to prove that the money he gave you was a loan not a gift.

No, he cannot put a lien on your car. He is trying to scare you. I am sure you also paid a lot of bills when you were together. He is a sore loser and he is trying to scare you. Unless you signed something saying that he would own half the car he is screwed. Tell him to Kiss your *** and hang up. Don't give him 5 seconds of your precious time.

No he cannot. See the only way this is legal is if he takes you to court and sues you for the money, if he wins he will get a judgement and if you refuse to pay the court can attatch a lein. Not likely to happen though. If he were a business owner and you owed him money then it would be much easier to do. He would still have to go through the court process.
I think he is using this as a scare tactic, don't worry about it.

I doubt if he can do it unless he's in the business of repairing cars. Most states allow a "mechanics Lien" for persons who are in the business. Your best bet would be to talk to a lawyer. The law varies from state to state.

No he cannot take a lien on your car since you never gave him permission to "posses" your car in any way. He can try to sue you in small claims court, since oral agreements to share expenses may be held up, however, if he doesn't even mention suing you (it's a huge hassle), then don't bring it up and try to avoid giving him any more information.

He can try, but he will have no recourse. The title is in your name. He might go to small claims court, but if you don't have a signed agreement to pay him back, I'm pretty sure he's screwed.
