Last year my onions produced, but they weren't round. They were flat, a smaller distance between the root and stem. I'm thinking I didn't plant them right. I live in zone 4, and the soil was tilled well and they had ample water. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

To correctly answer your question, one needs to know if you are planging onion bulbs, or starting them from seed. If you are starting from seed, you should plant the seeds about 1/4 inch below the ground's surface, and plant seeds about 1/2 inch apart. That's more or less for scallion (bunching) onions, the ones that are small with tiny white heads.

If you are planting onion bulbs, plant 2-3 inches deep and about 2-3 inches apart. That, again, would be for table onions.

If you are looking for large dry onions, such as the kind you find at the gardening store, plant bulbs deep enough so that a full-grown onion would be barely covered by soil. To know the exact depth, you might buy a store onion and use it as a guide to gauge planting depth.

It's good that you are planting onions as their scent can confuse hamful insects and keep them away. Try planing petunias between onions ; it'll give your garden a touch of color and looks nice between the onion greens.

A bulb is usually planted so the top is a distance equal to three times its diameter below the soil surface.
