Zakk Wylde once said that he thought Chet Atkins was the best guitarist ever- considering that Chet inspired dang near everyone on both sides of the pond all the way until he died, he deserves a place on this list, and it's relevant since you got Zakk on yours.

In terms of who's the best profeciently, you made three very good choices, and nearly everyone else mentioned others.

In terms of who's the most influential?

Chet Atkins- Country
Leo Kottke and Mason Williams- Acoustic
Jeff Beck- Instrumental
Jason Becker- Shred (Ywgnie Malsteem, my butt- Becker came out at the same time, and had more of an impact!)
Tony Ionmmi- Old metal
Dave Murray and Adrian Smith- New metal(2 guitars, and yes- Iron Maiden was a bigger and earlier influence than metallica just that mainstream music magazines are scared to say it!)
Randy Rhoads- New metal (1 Guitar)
Original Blues- Robert Johnson
New Blues- Stevie Ray Vaughn
Jimi Hendrix- Jam band rock
"arena" rock (80's rock)- Eddie Van Halen
Jazz- Django Rheihdhart
Jimmy Page- Hard Rock

Many of the people mentioned on here so far that aren't one of these people owe their influence at least in part to these people... I'm pretty tired, so I probably left a genre or two out. Fill in the blanks with who you think should go there...

I guess every person will have a 'favourite' guitarist, or a guitarist that just appeals you you the most, I personally really enjoy listening to Eddie Van Halen and Angus Young, but really I don't think there is realy such things as a 'best' guitarist because all these great guitarists have things about them that are brilliant. Different guitarists are good a different areas of playing, some might be brilliant as accurate picking such as Michael Angelo and Zakk Wylde. Some are known more for smooth legato playing such as Dimebag Darrell and Slash, some have great vibrato, again Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Dimebag, Gary Moore etc, but in my view what gets me the most is the personality or the character that the guitarist manages to get into his/her notes, and thats the main reason why Eddie Van Halen appeals to me... I just really love the way he shapes his notes.

It's a really difficult question to answer and there are so many different types of guitar players, there's country, delta blues, jazz etc etc to think about, I really couldn't ever agree on who is the 'best' and there's really no such thing, it's all a matter of who appeals to YOU. And it's interesting to think about why they appeal to you.

Actually the guitarist that is most recognized as the best, even in the world of rock, is not a rock star.
His name is George Benson. He plays progressive jazz and can out play all of them at the same time. He's phenomenal.

The entire music world agrees. He makes Hendrix sound like he's playing in slow motion. No joke.

That is a tough question. You and all of your friends chose great guitarists. Of course it is based on opinion in most cases. Here are several others that can jam the guitar both technically and improvised.

Randy Rhodes
Don Dokken
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
Prince or the artist formerly known as Prince
Keb Mo
