I am driving a 2000 Honda Civic and I was just wondering if it is possible for individual lights on the dashboard to burn out. (ie do they all have their own indivdual light) I've never seen the inside of a dash, and my gas tank has been on "E" for a long time. I am just wondering if the gas light is burnt out.

Could very well be a bulb. They are just incandescent lamps, the very same as ordinary household bulbs, just a different voltage requirement. They don't work like Christmas lights or anything, where one goes, they all go, not like that. It won't be the sending unit, as all that does is send a signal from a floating sponge on a stick attached to a rheostat that changes the voltage signal from a high to low range. The light is only operated by a signal from the guage. I would go for the lamp, first.

Note: Good luck with the dash, however, Hondas are notorious for difficulty in getting in the dash.

All of the lights on your dash that indicate something are called idiot lights. Turn signal indicators, alternator indicators, heat indicators, check engine lights, brake lights, all of them. The gas light is no exception. If it comes on, you're, well, you know. And if your gauge has been at E for a while, no light will help you, burned out or not.

It may be the sending unit. I suppose it could be. I would call the service dept. at a Honda dealer.
