The reason he changed to Steve Austin was becuase when he was still an up and comer working the indies, he went to an event where another wrestler "Dr. Death" Steve Williams was wrestling, who at the time was a bigger draw, the promoter said, well can't have two Steve Williams on the card, so he started calling himself, Steve Austin, ie: from the Six Million Dollar Man show, and hence one of the reasons he got the nick name the bionic redneck as well.
