I have a 99 Jaugar XJR I thin it has a blown head gasket. I was wondering if I can tell if it is a piston. Does anyone know.

If it were a piston, oil would be coming out the exhaust.

"blowing" a motor is a general term. There are literally hundreds of breakdowns that can occur under this umbrella. If you have a piston problem it could cause the motor to lock up suddenly ending in a loss of power steering and brakes, and loss of control, among other things like completely breaking a rod and sending it through the block. Pistons can fail in many ways. the wrist pin can seize, the skirt can collapse, the piston itself could chip or break. No telling what your problem is over the internet, but any time you run a motor with an obvious knock you are playing roulette and chancing more severe damage. A motor can run for months, or minutes.

You will notice a slight decrease in power and the exhaust will have a thumping quality to it. Turn the car on, get down by the tailpipe, and listen for this "thumping"sound and you can even feel the exhaust coming out. This could even be something so simple as a bad spark plug and/or wires. If the current plugs are over 75,000 miles I suggest you change them. I dont know if you work on your own cars, but your plugs should be a simple job, especially since your engine is mounted parallel to the length of the car( due to rear-wheel drive.) I hope you don't have to spend money on a new piston! GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!

typically you can tell a blown head gasket by looking at the oil, if it looks milky, almost white, then you have a blown head gasket, or a cracked block, head. a vacuum guage will show an unstable reading. in order to actually damage a piston, some very extreme things have to happen.

i own a repair shop and if it were a blown piston you would see a whole lot of blow by coming from the engine, that and it would have a real bad miss-fire in it,they wont always blow oil out the exhaust if a piston is bad,if it has a hole burnt in it ,this will just give it a lot of blow by and cause it to miss-fire real bad ,and you can run a compression check on it and it will instantly tell you if it does have one bad in it,this is really the fastest way to find out,run a check on all the cylinders and compare it,the one with the bad piston will be really low,but that's how you can find out, good luck with it hope this helps.

you can buy a cheap compression tester at any auto parts store. one by one remove your sparkplugs and put the tester over the hole. if you have a bad piston you will see an very large difference in the reading on that cylinder.
