i bought a dark green comforter and after washing it once, it has what look like bleach marks or discoloring on it, even though I do not use detergent with bleach. similar effect often happens with towels... I'm nervous about ever buying a colored comforter again!

If you use your washers bleach dispenser, may there is some remaining in it from the previous load. Just guessing. I don't even use my washers dispenser, I just put it in as the tub fills.

You need to start your washer and allow the detergent to mix with the water PRIOR to putting your laundry in.
It's not your comforter or towels... It's the detergent coming into direct contact with your clothing/etc.. prior to mixing/diluting with the wash water...

We learned this the hard way....Same way you're learning it...

You added the bleach too soon in concentrated form. Wait until the washer fill with water or dilute the bleach with water before adding.

The dye in the comforter my fade easily. You might want to try Tide color shield to prevent this from happening next time.
