give a reason why...

As my spouse is a published author with both a paperback coming out in May and a hardcover in October, I have to give you an honest answer!

The author makes more money for each copy of the hardcover sold - 10% of the cover price so about $2.20/ea.
The downside is that the market for hardcover books is much, much smaller than paperbacks so you sell fewer copies.
On the other hand, the paperback pays the author 8% of the cover price or about $0.53 per copy sold. However the market is far larger because the price is lower and they are easy to carry and read. They are disposable.
Finally, true book collectors collect hardcover - usually first editions - they are more durable and the paper is better quality - doesn't yellow as fast! Also libraries buy hardcovers because they can be circulated without falling apart.

If you want books to keep and reread them and you have a decent budget then buy a hardcover when you can get a healthy discount - otherwise - for sheer entertainment value - the paperback is the same story - and you can buy a second book with the money you saved!

My book signings have always been with trade paperback. However, if you have your own little library in your home, you may want to get the hard cover. For one thing they last a lot longer and the covers aren't bent and curled easily. The only drawback is that they cost a bit more.

I have to agree with the answers given here. Each has their own reasoning and preference.

I'd prefer to own hardcover because they are more sturdy than the paperbacks and last longer, but unfortunately they do also cost more so I more often end up buying paperback.

I prefer hard cover books, always have. Some of the artwork for the dust jackets is amazing, dating back to the 50's and the books look great on the shelves, plus you can add a mylar cover to protect the book.

Hardcover - because as an author, a hardcover with your name on the dust jacket and your picture inside really says you have arrived in the world of publishing. Besides, I have a library and they look better on the shelves and I also collect autographed first editions from some of my favorite authors. Pax - C.

I use transit to get to and from work, and to do my errands, and often I like to read. It is much easier to carry a paperback around in my purse, and doesn't weigh it down.
