Angelfish can be tank mates with a number of peaceful fish in a 40 gallon, although in a tank of that size you could keep a pair, not more. Good tankmates for them are Cardinal Tertras (lots of other tetras nip) aSmall Pleco (Zebra or Bristlenose, which stay small), and 3 Clown loaches. This makes a colorful tank which allows the angels to swim in the middle, the cardinals to school , and the loaches and p;eco on the bottom. Also recommended if you want more top dewelling fish are Blue gouramis and Honey Gouramis. I would include Dwarf Gouramis but the current epidemic of Dwarf gourami iridovirus is a problem. If you want another cichlid that is totally peaceful, the Keyhole Cichlid is recommended. Using the inch per gallon guideline (I dont know how big your agels are now), but figure 6 inches each, 6 neons = about 8-9 inches, each clown loach 4", pleco", gouramis 3", and keyhole 4," you could keep all of these in a 40 but you would have to eliminate a gourami or the keyhole cichlid. That"s about 35 inches of fish, but the Angels will grow, and may outgrow your tank in a year. It is however, an attractive mix either way you go. (No discus, the tank mates are Ok but ther tank is at least 15 gallons too small). Get an AquaClear 50 filter for this tank. The extyra 10 gallon capacity will keep things slightly cleaner and clearer.

You really need to include the tank size for good answers, but the above are all good. It comes down to this:
Any peaceful schooling fish that grows to at least 2", or an adult angel might get hungry.
Almost any bottom dweller, since angels use the middle of the water, including catfish, loaches, and dwarf cichlids.

Gouramis, they are really colourful, and will add a difference to the tank. They are really cool, and are generally quite hardy.

Gouramis---small cichlids like Kribensis, Rock, and Ram cichlids---Plecos---small loaches--- or gold fish.
None of these fish are schooling fish, but cichlids like to have a mate.
