4c is the same as saying 4 times c. C would be the same as 1 times c. So, as everyone said, if you have 4 c's and take away 1 c, you have 3 c's.

you have 4 c's (c+c+c+c)
you are subtracting a c from the 4 c's above (c+c+c+c+c-c)
leaving you with 3 c's (c+c+c)
*** 3c ***
