We don't really have mental institutions in America.
We just have lots and lots of Prisons or medication clinics that dispense thorazine freely like it was toilet paper.

Maybe Re estd Mental Health Care Centers
Use idle acerage alone.
Use data from Rescue missions on homeless for placement into Centers.
Make Govt & Public co run IE involve the Churches more.
Reuse idle hospital space if any.
Reuse campus space.
Combine services.
ID those most determental to Soceity & place.
Give Incentives for workers in Mental Health centers alone
See movie One Flew Over Cukoos Nest.
I dont Favor "instutiuions" for Mentally ILL BUT To Reform them for Today.
UC Camarillo or UC Channel Islands used be a Mental Health Center in CA State.
Changes id make in Mental Health:
Incentives for workforce hiring into.
Use homeotherapies
Use sound therapy
Change diet
Posotive mood colors & decorations.
Good lighting.
Modern rooms.
Privacy??
Isolate from Main Population those most Dangerous.
Games
Pet therapy
Running business by computer for some???
Art shows
Cooking shows
Sports area
etc
To Improve the Whole Person.
Holistic Healing.
Lower cost to the States & YOU.
Use Altnerative healing & Tradit;

We face a mental health care crisis in this country, and not just because of the recent incident. Mental health care is drastically underfunded. Many insurance programs don't cover full inpatient care or even outpatient care (some only cover medications, if anything).
Mental health care research is also underfunded by the public sector and organizations such as NARSAD have to take the front line and fund young investigators and others in the field to get research started.
It's not necessarily a matter of mental institutions, although the pendulum has definitely swung too far the other way from back in the dark ages of mental hospitals in this country. But this young man was one of many, many people not getting the health care he needed. Our whole health system needs an overhaul.

And there's another problem with the emotionally unstable that most people don't know about. They are obviously protected by some laws that don't protect the rest of us. I have a half-sister who is a degenerate druggie, but she is also considered a mental patient. I tried to get the state to make her get some help to stop the drugs, which were the reason for her mental problems in the first place. I gave them information that would get you or me tossed in jail for a long time. They said they couldn't do anything about it because she was a mental patient and anything with her had to be handled through the agencies that handle emotionally disturbed people! Talk about a free ride! She does things that should have her in prison for life - no joke- and yet she gets a free ride because she is a mental patient and that makes her different. What a load of sh*t!!!!

Yes, we do need to look at our mental health facilities; a lot of people who simply are not capable of living well on their own very well. And some are actually dangerous, though few are as dangerous as the VT killer. It is extremely difficult to get an adult treatment against their will, or even lock them up; the criteria are so strict. I'm pretty sure the VT killer would not have qualified. So we need to look at the civil commitment laws; patients as well as potential victims of crime would benefit.

How do we know anymore who is mentally ill?
That woman who just got convicted of killing her preacher husband is only going to do 2 years in jail at best. Thank God she will be on the streets again so soon. We need more murderers out now days, especially those who are so well trained.
Is our system wrong or our justice?

Every time I ride the New York City subways, I see someone who really should be getting some mental health care.

It certainly needs a very thorough study. They have to admit themselves if they are adult. There are very few who admit they have mental problems. My son is dead because we couldn't get treatment for him. At least he didn't kill anyone but he wasn't that kind of sick.
