I think our (as humans) need to survive is innate. We are here and therefore want to stay. As for the planet and for life in general, there's just no answer in my opinion. We don't know why life exists in all its infinite forms. Therefore we don't know the impact that the extinction of humans could cause not only on our planet, but life in general in the universe.
It may be important for us to survive, other than for personal reasons, and it may not as well. We'll never know. All I can say is to enjoy life while you have it.
Of course there are those religious people who feel that there is a god who created us and has his own purpose for us. But if there were a true answer as to whether there is a god or not...there wouldn't be so many religions at war with each other. So I think that the truth is...we just don't know.
Live, love, and laugh!

It's only important in our own human minds. Of course we are interested in self-preservation.
I read a very interesting article proposing that humans are the most disastrous invasive species to have every moved from region to region. We crowd out other species; we alter habitats and make those habitats unsuitable for native species; we cause extinctions; ...
I think we are the ultimate invasive species, at least so far.

There are two ways to answer this. One, if you don't why bother living? Turn your computer off and live in a nice forest somewhere.
Two, I don't think its necessarily important to the planet, it will still keep revolving for millions of years to come, but I think its important to find meaning in life and to give back to others and the planet. So if you think its unimportant than maybe its time you rethought what you are doing with your life and find something meaningful to contribute then perhaps you'll find life more important than it seems by your question. Good Luck.

Just as any species in the world, we all have in common at least one thing and that is to survive. Its not important, just a blip in this small universe!

Because it is us. However survival is not the final thing. If we just survive we'll end up in a dead end world. We must evolve and head out to the stars.

come tothink of it.... who willl take care other creatures without us... well somehow that's ironic... hahahaha because we are the major destroyer of environment and nature. But we should reflect that our main purpose in this world is to promote and improve life.... not only human life but alos other creatures here on earth....
