I am getting married and my fiancee has picked out some fine china for our registry. In my opinion it is really old fashioned looking, and out of all of the choices at the store, it is the 'oldest' looking. I have told her which sets I liked - very plain and more modern looking. The question is, how do you shop for china? The way I see it is to find a balance between classy stylish looks and cost considering that pieces would need to be replaced if broken. I would also think that you wouldn't want too many embellishments for fear of it going out of style, but also something classic. My fear is that her tastes are too old and don't fit the modern style of our home. I am lost and have no idea how to shop for china, so I would appreciate any advice and maybe some websites to reference as well.

This is in response to "hop..." -- I am really looking for some major advice aside from just pattern, though, considering this is such an expensive investment. I am the type of guy that goes to the library and leafs through Consumer Reports before making any kind of big purchase, and I am afraid that we may make a choice on a pattern but the plates are junk, or that we decide to buy 'fine china' and not 'bone china' or any number of the 'soft/hard porcelain china' or anything else. I am really clueless about this type of thing and I dont want a lot of money dropped on something that is junk... do you know what I mean? So thanks for all the help so far!
