It's not a problem, bettas frequently do that. It's just a matter of them softening the food a bit it allowing it to become smaller bites.

1.the beta fish isn't feeling well and lost his appetite as a result.so he's regurgitating the food pulp after munching on some of the nutrients.bring the fish for a thorough health check-up just to be sure.

2.the beta fish is a picky eater and the food doesn't taste good.try giving it the flake foods,if you haven't already or change the diet plan to something that the beta fish seems to accept more.

3.the beta fish is depressed and lonely, so it is acting out by starving himself until you buy him a nice friend fish to keep him company:)

4.sometimes i've observed them eating rocks and spitting them back out.maybe the beta fish has this habit with food.he is just bored and spitting to amuse himself, not because he doesn't like the food or is sick.if this is true, then it is normal behavior.every fish has it's individual quirks.

Do you feed it pellets or flakes? If you feed it pellets, the pellets might be too big for it to eat.

Are you feeding him beta food? Beta fish are very picky. Some foods do not taste good to them. Go to a pet/fish store and ask the expert what their advice is.

How long have you had him? It could take him a while to adjust to the tank.

It could be lonely and depressed. Maybe you should get a friend for it. Some fish starve themselves because they are lonely.

Things to do/check:

-the temperature of the tank is 78-79 F
-you clean the tank every month
-toxins from any nearby sources are not getting into his tank.
-soak all dry foods for 5 minutes prior to feeding.

-Make sure there are proper electrolyte and calcium levels in his tank. see this article:

I recommend a medicated bath in Methylene Blue as this is a hemoglobin transfer agent and will aid with any anemia and ammonia toxicity as well as many infections.

There are some websites below. Check them out.

This is not bad,its not something wrong. The betta just wants to chew his food write! Thats why Betta food is tiny compared to tropical fish food so that the betta can swollow it faster and better. Its like putting a pie in your mouth and you wanting to swallow it in whole.

If you are using the little pellet like food, try switching to the beta flakes, mine wouldn't eat the pellets, but loves the flakes.

Thats normal, nothing to worry about. When they find their food hard or too big to take in they spit it out. So try breaking his food into smaller granules.

He could be sick, or he could just do that. My Betta stopped eating for a week, then started again.
