you can try for disability, but you have to prove that you cannot work. Not just prove that you have the disease. Your doctor will have to send documents validating your claims.

It can take several years before disability would approve your claim. They almost always deny the first time.

If you have had this for three years, with no support....what have you been doing to support yourself?

You should be eligible for SSDisability benefits if you have enough work credits in your history. If not, you may be able to get help through SSI which would help you with food and necessities each month. You can even apply on the internet at ssa.gov. Good luck to you. My Mom and my brother are both bipolar. My mom is on SSDI and my brother is working and doing well on his new meds. Hope you can get some help.

Hi, Birdie. Welcome to my world which coincidently is colored with similar crayons from Hell as are yours. Bi-polar dx in most states will get you SSI, SSD or whatever they call it in your home state. I survived undiagnosed with the modern term of bi-polar (in my day they called it dementia praecox or some other equally cryptic term ) meaning I could read and write with total proficiency but had no idea you meant me when discussing cheerleaders or the right to bear arms.
You have the right to continue school, get a decent job and avoid the expected headlines of a future Cho Seung Hui. www.ssa.gov could be helpful, your doctor's testimony will be even more helpful. Think you gotta be found bi-polar by two others but that is not all that difficult, Cheapest way would be to "go off" in McDonald's and talk about the Martians wanting to add cream and sugar to your coffee, but most practical way would be to ask your doc to refer you to a couple of confirming sources.
