in older cars with drum brakes it pushed the brakes apart locking them against the drum.

in newer cars with disc brakes, many of them come with small drums as part of the disc on the back wheels and they work the same way.

your parking brake applies your rear wheel brakes via cable attached to secondary shoe on vehicle with drum brakes in the rear.if it is disc brakes in the rear then cable pulls on actuator which applies a small set of brake shoes mounted in a small brake drum attached to disc brake rotor.
