Assuming that your statistics are correct, and that those 80% of Americans don't have any legitimate perspective of the world, that still doesn't have any bearing on the 20% who want perspective on the world. Furthermore, if you are objecting to Americans having no perspective, it doesn't seem logical to prevent those that desire such a perspective from gaining it. Don't punish me just because all the other Americans are idiots.

What's your question? Do you really give a $#!+ about how many Americans have passports?

Let's retry phrasing the question. Which do you like better: "Why doesn't every American have a passport?" Or "Why don't Americans travel abroad more?"

Well, the main reason why most Americans don't have passports is simple- we don't need passports for 99% of our activities.

As to why Americans don't travel abroad more, the answer is simple. Why go overseas to be treated bad, served crappy food, and yelled at in a forgein language? Lets cut the paperwork and visit NYC and get robbed by people who speak our own language. The only thing missing is the car bombs.

President Bush IS the head of a SuperPower. I don't like him much, but I respect the office he holds. He does not need to know where countries are, if they are hostile towards the US and have enough might to be a threat to our nation's security, he has a responsiblity to protect The United States.

I guess you're overlooking the AVERAGE person cannot afford the $100 cost of a passport or a trip abroad. My dad makes $38K a year as a forklift operator and had 3 kids. Yes, my mom works in a Day Care facility. They are not in a financial position to outfit the entire family with passports and fund a fancy trip to Europe or South America. He barely pays the bills and 3 kids' college tuition is a killer.

The president pays more in taxes than my parents earn in 3-4 years. I'm not sure what countries Bush is trying to stomp on. It's not like anyone NOT in the government or military is planning a vacation to Iraq any time soon.

I get what your trying to say
If most people have never been abroad how can they make informed decision about a candidates foreign policy etc
It explains a lot

I have done some reading into the dichotomy of the united states

it seems there are two separate and mutually hostile nations in the U.S.
the ones that occupies coastal cities
embraces tolerance and freedom and votes democrat
and the other that er ...live every where else
that vote republican ,fears foreigners and gays and all the rest
I imagine few of these possess passports
lets not confuse these two separate countries again

I've been in 9 countries other than the US and have never had a passport. Didn't need one, most were attended courtesy of the US Army.
Also your logic is flawed. Just because a large % of the population does not travel out of htis country does not mean they cannot educate themselves about what is going on in the world.
I would guess you would think only astronauts should have anything to say about space exploration since they have been the only people to have been there. All the people who helped put them there do not know what they are doing.
Not supposed, we are a SuperPower and the only one by the way.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, 80% of them do not travel outside the US, so be quiet. Sleeping dogs and all that.

As for news, cow on the tracks, there are some towns that don't even have that level of excitement in their news.

As for Bush, and when he steps down, unless someone sends him off to an early dirt nap, he will nt be travelling anywhere.

Just as well mind. Can you imagine bumping in Bush in say Bond Street, preferably in a big fast car. Man would you want to duff him one.

Well look at it another way.

Americans can travel about 2,000 miles in any direction, without a passport.

No other place on earth can say that.

I'm sorry, but i don't consider a german driving 20 miles from home to visit france, real international travel.

Compare that to an american family who might drive 1,800 miles just to visit Disneyland.

If you compare the number of Americans visiting Europe to the number of Europeans visiting America, the number is even.

The passport issue is a bogus issue.

For a european to travel the distance from NY to Florida, they would cross atleast 6 different countries.

I don't see much difference in someone from Greece visiting Beligum, from someone in Florida visiting upstate NY.

Its like your saying, just because a european can visit another country for $20.00 worth of gasoline, Americans should spend $2,000.00 to visit as many different countries.

Geography does play a huge role in this.

Heck, i can show you 40 million Americans who have been all over Europe and not a one ever had a passport.

Just look at the number of US military who have lived in Europe and Asia over the last 40 years.

Were not talking short two week visit's, but living there for years at a time.

What a crap statistic. I am an Aussie and we have alot of yanks travel here. They are welcome anytime. Us Aussies love Americans so i hope more get passports and come visit us. I have been to USA several times and i can see why they may not travel. USA is a brilliant country with lots to see.

That other 20% deserves passports because they applied and paid for them. Bush has a Globe in his office, he knows where the countries are.

An American in the Lake district shouted to me, "Hey Boy"!
"is there any huntin or fish'n"?
Typical American stereotype, go to another country, and kill something!
