A standard light microscope (compound) with 10x and 40x objectives and a 10x eyepiece will be all you need.

If you are thinking of buying a microscope, try to get a used school or university microscope that has been cleaned and readied for resale. Several different microscope dealers offer these. You can get a lot more for your money like this. Cynmar.com is one dealer that can sell you a used scope.

Don't buy a toy microscope. The resolution on these scopes is usually terrible. They claim huge magnifications, but the image is blurry.

A binocular one would probalby be good to use. It doens't have that higher magnification eg 30x or so and is great for seeing some larger things like the little insects in the pond.

To see smaller things, you can put them on a slide and view under higher mags in a compound/light microscope, you will be able to see them swim around too and see fine details on them.
