what makes them so great?

I think good writers have a great sense of compassion - the ability to show you a character in all their truth, whether it be ugly or beautiful, and as a reader you will still be very compelled to know this character more or to empathize. They have the ability to see from many different angles and open their readers' eyes to these different ways of seeing the world.

They have the ability to draw you into the story and create a steady pace. They have a passion for their subject matter, and a madness to tell a great story.

Then I want to second loryntoo. I think these top writers are very disciplined to be able to start and complete an entire story. They are also fiercely determined and filled with incredible perserverance because the publishing industry is an incredibly tough business.

1. The discipline to finish a story
2. Good knowledge of the language they are writing in.
3. The discipline to proofread and revise.
4. The ability to take constructive criticism in the nature that it was given, particularly from editors and their peers.
5. The discipline to keep learning how to improve their writing.
6. The ability to come up with a creative thought and brainstorm it up to a full length novel.
7. The perserverance to get that book published.
8. The perserverance to get that book marketed.
9. The discipline to start on a new book long before the first one has hit the shelves.
10. The ability to find a job or financial support that will allow them to write.

I am not kidding.

I have some ideas:

1.) They use discriptive details in the story, keeping the reader interested.
2.) A good plot that makes sense, to keep the reader from getting frusturated.
3.) Way to have characters develop in the story

Being brave like the top contributer here was she said she had 7 books published already, that is good maybe you might want to listen to her! I can't beat that yet, I will have to try to catch up, smile. Good luck.

they are able to spin a story that is believable (at least temporarily) and write in such a way that you get sucked into the story and environment - tastes, smell, sounds, etc
