Wow, there are allot of stupid answers from ignorant people who know absolutely nothing about automatic transmissions.
Yes you burned out the trans by running low on fluid. An automatic transmission need fluid pressure to function properly, IE....low fluid = low pressure = slipping/burnt clutches. The REAL reason it still works in reverse, even though the reverse clutch may be somewhat burnt is because all automatics increase the line pressure in reverse. Almost double of that in Drive. That's why it is still (for now) working in reverse. The bad news is that you need an overhaul to fix the transmission.

The transmission is toast. As for why reverse sort of works is because there's enough tranny fluid in the torque converter to build up enough pressure to move the vehicle a little bit.

internally different clutch packs are used for different gears
when it runs out of fluid it has no lube or pressure turning friction wears the discs until they won,t engage before the fluid bypasses the seals inside the pack
forward packs get more wear than reverse anyway if you were running in reverse all of the time when it ran out of fluid you would probably have forward and no reverse

yeah your burnt up. i did that in my first car in high school. im guessing 1, 2, and 3 dont work , as well as d, or over drive. the cheapest thing for you to do is get a used tranny from a junkyard. most auto repair places will also have contacts of places that sell used trannys. rebuilding it will be expensive, but its an option too. or just part the truck out online, and buy a new one.

Because the reverse gear doesn't spin, obviosly, when the car was in drive...duh! So It will still work when the other gears don't. How did you burn up the trans.? It will slip major if it is more than 2 quarts low.

All the internal workings run off of pressurized tranny fluid. It's also used for cooling. Running out will destroy your transmission as fast as your engine when it's out of oil.

the reverse is higher up in the tranny, where it gets a little oil, eniugh to move, but it will soon go out too.
