Robin Hood can be considered a hero to the people that he helped...
But a villian to those that he stole from.

He's a bit of both really.

Sure, I'd count Robin Hood as a hero. The tricky bit would be finding out the historical reality rather than the legend. Although there was probably (at least one) real Robin Hood, he is more a legendary hero than an historical hero. King Arthur falls in the same boat.

Some real people who are regarded as heroes include
Joan of Arc,
Edward the Black Prince,
Richard the Lionheart,
Saladdin,
William Wallace,
Robert the Bruce,
John Simpson Kirkpatrick

I'm pretty sure you can find information on all of the above online. The last one might be hard to find in the library unless you are in Australia.

Why Robin Hood?? Choose someone who was a real hero, without a doubt. Robin Hood, desptie being a real person, is an obscure figure. Was he a hero? Some say yes, others say no. I am a teacher, and if a student gave me an ambiguous subject like this, I would demand a very strong argument for proving he was a hero. If I were you, choose someone else! The history of the world has many heroes!

Your problem is, you don't have a clear definition of what a hero is. Define it first, then stick to your thesis. Make three characteristics of what, to YOU, a hero is. Then find someone in history who fits that description. There are plenty of examples. Like I said, Robin Hood is a poor example. Its almost a comic-book type myth. Look for a real person without any legendary myths surrounding them. Its more effective.

Personally, I'd define a hero as someone who:

- saves peoples' lives out of compassion
- has courage to fight for their beliefs
- has special talents used to help people

By defining what a hero is for you, its easy to find historical figures who fit that description. Here's a list of my personal heroes:

- Mother Teresa
- Pope John Paul II
- Florence Nightingale
- Norman Bethune

The list is long! Check these names on the internet if you have no info on them.

Good luck!

Robin Hood is a hero of the people. He's a nobleman who recognizes the corruption of the ruling nobility and begins a campaign of "robbing the rich to give to the poor". So, to the common people he's a great hero, helping them with a tyrannical oppressor.

Of course, this makes him a great villain in the eyes of the ruling elite, but that's a different story.

Just for clarification... The stories about him may be fiction, but There was a Robin (Hood) or Loxley and he is buried on his old estate.

Ethically, he was, his actions benefited the common good. On the other hand, his actions were immoral and illegal. That presents both sides of the coin for a discussion for you.
