I think the Aral Sea is nearly non-existant right now. It's literally disappeared off the map

The Aral Sea. The Soviet Union wanted to grow cotton in the region, a crop that's very intensive with massive needs for irrigation and fertilizers. So they used most of the water of the rivers that flow into Aral Sea (the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya) for irrigation. It led to a shrinking of the Sea and an ecological disaster, mostly pollution from fertilizer runoff.
