Thank you Zanti3 for the math information concerning solving mixed numbers. I would have did it the long way.

3 x 32 + 21 = 96 + 21 = 117
3 x 32 + 29 = 96 + 25 = 125
117/32 x 1/2 = 117/64
125/32 x 1/2 = 125/64

Change 3 21/32 to 117/32 times 1/2 = 117/64
Change 3 29/32 to 125/32 times 1/2 = 125/64

1. start by multiplying the denominator by the whole #
2. then add it to the nominator getting the answer over the demoninator
3. then you would divide the # by 1/2 same thing as multiplying it by 2
3 21/32 = 96 + 21 = 117/32 = 117/32 * 2 = 74 2/3
3 29/32 = 96 + 29 = 125/32 = 125/32 * 2 = 7 13/16
i hope this helps
good luck

being that the bottom half of the fraction is the same number ...you add the whole number 3+3=6
then add the top numbers of the fractions...21+29=
50/32 Now divide 50 by 32.....getting a whole number and a remainder...add the whole number to the 6 and the remainder becomes ??/32. The proper way to do this...take your whole number....multiply by the bottom number of the fraction , then add the top number.... 3x32+21=117/32 Do this to both groups of numbers....3x32+29=???/32 then you are ready to add them together.(just the top numbers)once you have this fraction....if the top number is larger than the lower number...you will need to divide top number by lower number....your final answer will be a whole number with the remainder being placed over the number you divided by. I won*t give you the answer...but maybe an example would help....21/12 + 6 5/12= 2x12+1=25/12+
6x12+5(77/12)=102/12 Divide 102 by 12=8 with 6/12 remaining...since both 6 and 12 are divisible by 6 let*s lower the fraction to 1/2. final answer would be 8 1/2.

Man, some folks here are sure doing this one the hard way...
As one poster suggests, the two numbers are already close together - from 21 to 29 is 8 units. So, move 4 units to get to the midpoint, which is therefore 3 25/32.
By the way, this is the type of problem you often see at the beginning of standardized tests. Most of the students get the correct answer, but the best test takers find the quick way to get the answer, giving them more time for the rest of the test.

AJ,
first, since 3 is part of each number, you can start by intuitively eliminating them. If you cant do it intuitively, then simply add 3 and 3 to come up with 6 and then divide by two and get "3". So remove it from your calculations immediately.
next, you have a common denominator. This is good. Then simply add 21 and 29 to get 50 and divide this by two to derive 25.
now ad your 25 over the denominator of 32 to get 25/32 and add back in your original 3 to get your final answer of
3 25/32
