I have an HP zd7000 laptop and when I plug it into my ethernet port nothing happens. My network connection is enabled. My roommates dell desktop works and recognizes it. Do I need a router or a modem of some sort?

First make sure that you have all the required Drivers for the Ethernet Adapter Chip ( on a CD or something similar).

Uninstall the Ethernet adapter drivers.

Reboot the computer.

Wait for Windows to recognize the Ethernet adapter and prompt you for the Drivers.

Point the install Wizard to the location where you have the Drivers.

OK so now you have the Ethernet port all setup and installed properly.

Now connect the ethernet cable to the port and see if you get any signals.

If you do not get any signals then you have to test the Ethernet connection itself. Perhaps it a faulty cable.
