Because wearing a suit reinforces that there is a right and wrong in society. Of course this is an illusion propogated by those in power. But, most attorney's have already either accepted it so they can get money, or are actually convinced of this delusion.

It has everything to do with showing respect to the court. Also, attorneys are officers of the Court, and are expected to set an example for others who appear before the Court.

If you ever have to appear before a Judge, do yourself a favor and dress appropriately. While Judges are not supposed to judge one based on their outfit alone, it is hard to be taken seriously in jeans, etc.

Our son took Criminal Justice in college. He had to intern at a federal bldg. for several months to complete his course. This is what he learned, due to the fact he had to go to court cases many times. The judge's he came to know, said they expected the attorneys to dress to reflect their respect for the court. This means wearing a suit. They also frowned on anyone else in their courtroom, dressing in levi's and such.
Lets face it, we all know you can tell a lot about a person by how they dress when they enter a courtroom. You can't tell everything but it does give you a little clue.
I sure would want my lawyer looking professional. The lawyer will also suggest to you what you should wear to look like a decent human being.
Believe me, if I have to go to court, I will remember this and not go in a mini skirt.

its all about appropriate dress and being taken seriously.
No one takes a man in a toga seriously...only that he may be seriously drunk...an attorney that tries a case before a jury in blue jeans is asking that jury to vote against him.

It's just the way things are done in that type of career, much like in a large corporation or other professional careers. Judges in England (and America back in the day) had to wear wigs (maybe still do nowadays!) just because it was tradition!

Respect for the laws they represent. A lawyer is dressed in a suit to represent the law he is defending not himself. It is a form of autonomy much like judges wearing robes - it is about respect for the law and not the person defending or interpreting it.

Because it is inappropriate. A court hearing/trial is conducted in a business like manner, therefore business suits are worn.

You gotta be kidding the Judge would throw them out of courtroom, faster than he had that sound during his trials. PUMP, PUMP, PUMP. He is now in prison I guess he is still pumping away.
