Comming from another south paw
dont ask why, just consider yourself special.

they say lefties are more creative thinkers.
I believe it is not genes, I am one of 4 kids and the only leftie and between my siblings and I there are 8 children and not one leftie.

I am just the odd one (special)

No, your left-handedness is not a sin. My dad had that same thing happen when he was a child. He's 75 years old. By the time his sister (who is 62) was in school, they allowed her to write with her left hand (that's in the United States). He never said that they told him it was evil or anything like that. Just that they believed the "correct" way to write was to use the right hand. Just like teachers today teach children to hold their pencil a certain way. The teachers in the past did the same thing - only they not only specified how to hold it, the specified which hand to hold it with. ADDITIONAL NOTE: I see people saying that the nuns (or any teachers of the past) were sick, mean, whatever. But, people work with what they know. I grew up during the same time as your parents and we didn't use seat belts or carseats for babies in cars. Parents who did that today would be considered bad parents. Actually, they would be fined or possibly jailed. Does that make my parents (and all parents from that time period) bad? I don't think so!

I am also a lefty and no one in my immediate family is. I have a cousin on my dad's side and an uncle or two on my mom's side that are lefties. But, genetics don't seem to play a big role.

And just for fun:

http://lefthanded.cdf-design.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-handed (This offers some theories as to why people might be lefthanded. Though it does seem identical twins have a greater chance of being left handed if the other one is.. So I guess it can be part genetics)

I was in a study about left hand ism, and the researchers found that a large percentage of lefties have a different type of wiring in our brains than righties. Left handers have more connections between both hemispheres than most Right handers. It seems that Lefty's use both sides of the brain together, more readily. It doesn't make us any smarter just gives different ways of looking at problems or different answers to questions. The Theory they came up with is that Lefty's could be a regressive genetic trait. as the numbers of left to right hand ism is fairly constant at 11 to 13%. The notion that you just used one hand more than the other is not correct. It is that your brain tells you which hand to use. You can change from a left to a right hander and back but the initial trigger seems to be your brains instructions.

being left-handed is a completely random occurance. there is a 1/10 chance you can be left-handed, so it isn't really influences by genes

i think its because when you were a baby, you used your left hand more and became better with it. whoa, for a second i thought we had 2 pairs of hands so i was gonna say "became better with THEM" lol, stupid moment. but yeah, feel special, there aren't many left handed people, and lefties are awesome!

its not genes, its you when you were younger that you just happened to practice things more with your left hand. its also related to culture because people think that doing certain things with your right hand is more proper and doing things with your left hand is improper.

My mom was right handed and she learned to become "bi- handed" she can write with her right hand as well as her left hand. she can do other things with her left hand also like her right hand. Im not saying its easy but i dont think it would be genetics or impossible. it would take lot of time and practice using your other hand so it can feel more natural and more controlled. but it can be done.

i don't understand the above ↑ if its completely random, it should be 50/50 ?

maybe is as simple as we just felt more comfortable using that hand.
