Most likely chiggers. You will know when you get infested by them. The itch will not stop for quite some time although there are plenty of home remedies and modern remedies to take care of the problem.

No see-ums are more gnat like that chiggers and usually are from the north US climes. Wisc. Canada and northern states. There is a product called Muskol. It is very effective against these mites. Keep this product around since it is great for mosquitoes also. It also covers tics and deer tics. For the price, it is a great product.

Or they could be spit bugs... i think those guys are black too....

Do you also find allot of wet spots in the grass that look like someone spit there? If you look in the middle of it their is often a little black bug in there.
