i've tried it many times before and have failed. could someone please give me a walk-through on how to set up a wireless connection? ...without just sending me a link to or telling me to go to their wiki...

Have you tried NdisWrapper? Worked great for me.
Otherwise, the free Mandriva distrubution has great built-in support for all sorts of wireless devices. Recognized ALL of mine right away. Good luck!
