Andre Ware, He had a great arm and was able to run the ball. He just had two major problems.
# 1. He was before the time of the mobile QB, only Randall Cunningham was successful at being a mobile QB.
#2. He played for the worst franchise in the history of sports. The Detroit Lions, this organization forced the greatest running back in the game to retire. They could have ruined the careers of Brett Favre, Joe Montano, John Elway, Peyton Manning, or Joey Harrington ( oh wait the did ruin Joey) if any of them would have been drafted by Detroit.

Marinovich. He was put in a doubly tough situation going to essentially his hometown team and his Dad also played a part in his failure. He was a bit to laid back (had a little Ricky Williams in him) but given time to mature he had the phyical skills and unlike any other you mention except Schuler he had a great understanding and feel for the game. He read plays well and checked down, had little trouble seeing what the defense was doing. Smith, Leaf, Klingler and Ware really had no ability to understand the mental part of the game, when and where to throw. Klingler and Ware were more a product of a system in college, college football sometimes has a way of making guys look better than they actually are (Timmy Chang jumps to mind...smashed a lot of NCAA records but again a product of a system). Smith only had 12 games of college starting so teams were more fooled by the 1 season and the kid was a workout wonder, he isnt the first to fool scouts during the combine and pro day workouts and wont be the last. Had Marinovich been given a couple of seasons on the bench the raiders would not have signed Gannon and maybe no SuperBowl but he might have gotten them there anyways.

Thought provoking question. Obviously, they were all talented guys. So theorically, all should or could have been successful in the right environment with the right system and coaches.
That said, my pick would be Ryan Leaf. He no doubt, desperately needed an advisor to help him with his attitude/mental game. But he had so much talent, such a waste.

I think Akili Smith. He had great promise, but was not given the coaching, or the players around him, to be successful.
Ryan Leaf was so immature he never would have succeeded.

Couch-he wasn't too bad when the Packers had him for the short time they did. Maybe he just needed some better coaching.

how about wr mike williams. the detroit lions picked him up.
just another one to throw in the list. otherwise, probably ryan leaf. the guy might have been able to do great things if he were more patient and waited for his time to shine.

well i am a Chargers fan, and even though i hate Leaf, maybe if he wasnt thrown in so fast, maybe sat on the bench learning and maturing he would have been decent. we all know now he was not mentally ready for the game.
