How does it produce energy???

To produce energy, you have to TURN something, like a turbine. You have to turn mechanical energy into electrical energy.
Most power plants produce electrical energy in fundamentally the same way:
1) Coal fire power plants burn coal to heat up water and produce steam that they pump through pipes and use to turn turbines
2) Nuclear power plants use nuclear energy to heat up water and produce steam that they pump through pipes and use to turn turbines
3) Geothermal power plants use naturally heated ground water to produce steam that they pump through pipes and use to turn turbines
4) Hydroelectric power plants use the force of naturally running river water to turn turbines
5) Wind power plants use the force of naturally flowing air to turn turbines

All the previous answers are wrong! First off, let me set you straight on one thing, geothermal does not produce energy, it is a form of energy. Energy can be transformed from one form to another form, but it cannot be created or destroyed. A possible exception was provided by Einstein as E=mC^2, but in his view, matter is just "frozen energy" thus preserving the concept of the "Conservation of Energy".

deep inside the earth there is lot of heat and pressure. this leads to the melting of rocks. melted rocks are called magma.
water is inserted into the earth through pipelines. when water comes into the contact with the magma a lot of of steam is produced which is used for generating power.

Water seeps down towards the magma and returns as super heated steam.
