When your iPod preferences come up on the screen (if you have the most recent version of ITunes), select the option to manually update your iPod. Then you can delete songs by right-clicking and selecting "delete" and add songs by dragging and dropping to your iPod icon.

If you don't want the iPod to update automatically and you want to remove all the songs off of it, then you will need to format the iPod. The option should be available on iTunes after you plug in the iPod. If not, you may have to go to Edit -->Preferences.

Youll need to change your setting into 'manually updating' your ipod. If you keep it as automatic, you will have to keep all your songs on itunes or else youll lose everything on your ipod when you plug it in again.

By chanigng it to manual, you are able to delete all the songs from your computer and still have them on your ipod. I do it so that it doesnt take up lots of space on my comp.

I had that problem until i figured out that it was what you had to do. To remove music, as soon you have changed it to manually updating, simply just right clik on the song and delete them.
