I remember listening to The Offspring, Jane's Addiction and Green Day long before they became mainstream. Well, maybe Jane's Addiction never became the huge commercial success like the other 2, but it's always just kinda funny to me when people think "Dookie" and "Smash" were Green Day's and The Offspring's first albums, respectively.

What exactly constitutes not being mainstream?

I've seen a couple of bands go huge, but I didn't particularly like them over anything else. I'm thinking of the Goo Goo Dolls who had a following in Buffalo, NY. That was cool to see them get as big as they did.

I saw Oasis on their first tour to North America. They played just a little local venue. Next time they came back they were massive.

I used to like Ride quite a bit before anyone in North America really knew who they were. Maybe that's not mainstream enough though.

Korn, ok I was in college radio at the time and college radio starts playing stuff some time before commercial radio picks it up. When the first CD came out in 94 it was great. Not that the stuff that came after was horrible or anything, but unplugged made me wanna hurl. And yeah I've gotta agree with a previous poster about the Offspring.
