Hello,
Yes, first you need to think about what type of beads you want to make and what you will be doing with them.
Great places to learn and make friends are
Yahoo Groups and the Bead & Button (magazine) Forums. There are many professionals and amateurs who are helpful and can direct you. Remember to look all around these sites yourself...using the "Search" facilities as many beginner topics are covered thoroughly. Introduce yourself. Have fun.
http://www.beadandbutton.com/bnb/community/forum/default.asp Check out the Meet the Community Folder....
http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=bead+making will bring you to some of the Groups at Yahoo. Sign up and give them a try!!
Hope you have fun....and hope this helps.

If you want to learn to make beads rather than learning "beading" (which is usually just stringing pre-made beads in various ways, adding clasps, etc.), polymer clay is definitely one way. But there are so many types of beads and looks of beads that one can make with polymer clay that it's hard to describe it all... so if you're interested, check out the Beads page at my site at least to get some general ideas of what's possible:

...and larger "beads" (pendants):

If you are looking for how to make glass beads, I found Cindy Jenkins books wonderful! I completely taught myself how to make beads from her books. Since then, many others have been added to my library.
Also, there are great tutorials in the WetCanvas Glass Forums and the WetCanvas Wearable Arts Forums. I find these forums quite valuable and have learned so much from them.

with polymer clay its easy, roll it into a shape you like, push a large needle or something through it for a hole, bake the bead as the manufacturers instructions tell you to.

You can make them with polymer clay and bake them in an oven.
