It could actually be really SMART to get a BMW for a first car. If the 16 year old anticipates keeping the car through high school and college, then the car's reliability will be a big factor in the cost of repairs needed during that 6 year period. A durable vehicle is likely to require fewer repairs than a less reliable model.

It depends... is it BRAND NEW or USED?
If it's brand new, then I WOULD NOT recommend you getting it. The reason is, you will be bound to make some stupid mistakes on your first car. Including but not limited to: your first fender bender, curbing your wheels, having "friends" puke in your car...etc. DON'T DO IT.
If it's used, an E36 would be a good one to start with. However, your objective should be either learn to maintain the car yourself (it's a useful skill) or be able to pay for your own maintenance. After a few years, when you've matured and past all the growing pains of your first car (provided if it's not totalled yet), you can consider getting a new one if you can afford it.
I'm leaving the snob factor out of this answer because this ultimately lies in the person driving the car - you.

my 16 yr old is getting something that has little value so when she crashes it, i wont care. but, if your dad has big bucks, go for it. the only thing i woudl say about a bmw being the wrong car for u is that it is rear wheel drive which is harder to drive in the snow and heavy rain. if your dad is dropping big bucks i would go for a new civic ex that has airbags all around you and will last you through college and into grad school. bmw's are not all that reliable and way expensive to repair.

It's not snobby if you can afford it go for it. Remember though if you're paying for insurance and parts that a BMW is going to cost you more then a typical car. If you don't have to worry about that stuff go for it enjoy it other people are just jealous :)

no i odnt think so,frankly because of the inexperience of the person driving the car,and those around the car.more than likely basically its gauranteed that somebody is going to run into it. also the insurance on it is going to be sky high. look into something more practical.not only for cost of ownership, but for the idiots in the parking lot,and the inexperience of the driver behind the wheel.technology DOES NOT make up for lack of skill or experience

it is not snobby to ask your dad for the car that u want to have, but the bmw are pretty fast and they do cause a lot of accidents on the road cause ppl ant to safe in them. but as long as your safe in it . you will do just fine having one.

Number one reason spoiled brats die in America? Driving high performance cars over 100 on the highway. but those are kids that get M3's or M5's as first cars. If you're getting just a regular 3 series, it should be cool since they are less than 300 hp.
