first player ever to be banned and fined for diving was Rivaldo in the 2002 world cup when he was struck by the ball on the leg and colapsed holding his face, all whislt he was meant to take a corner.
he didnt play again in the world cup as far as i remember,

This will be a good thing, i hate diving. Chelsea seem to have become good at it recently....

I read about this today but I have more questions than answers for you. :( Sorry ...

Is this the first time that they used the television evidence to penalize a player after the match has ended? I understand if they make the penalty decision while the match is still going on, but in this case, was the penalty given after the match was over? Is this something new?

Diving is really bad but I think if FIFA is going to start imposing penalties after the match is over, then there should be clear guidelines on how these incidents will be reviewed and what penalties will be imposed. And then they should start imposing these rules for the next season.

Would they still ban Adriano if Materazzi's penalty shot did not go in? Can they ban the referee for allowing the penalty shot and not carding Adriano during the match for diving?

Here's how that dive was described in eurosport's play-by-play description of the 51st and 52nd minute of the match:

51" Penalty for Inter!!!! And at first sight it looks like the referee has dropped a clanger!! Replays confirm...it was a pure dive! There wasn't even a hint of contact as Adriano went down under the "challenge" of Doni.
52" Marco Materazzi steps up....and sends the 'keeper the wrong way. No poetic justice in this instance. Excellent penalty.

guy Utd and Chelsea broke away very late this season. merely 5-6 weeks in the past, the two might desire to mathematically have ignored out on a Champions League spot. sure, city, Liverpool, Spurs, Villa, Everton and Arsenal might desire to all beat Valencia, Pathetico Madrid, Seville, Villareal, Mallorca, Deportivo and Bilbao. not one of the English communities above, different than for city are prosperous. Arsenal and Liverpool are nicely off yet no longer prosperous. The others are incredibly undesirable.

Inter Milan are Appealing so it was not team enforced. FIFA has not made a statement about it. It is an Italian League decision to ban him. Domestic league competition, I do not think FIFA could have banned him if they wanted to. UEFA neither, if is up to the Italian equivalent of the FA to ban him or not.
