It's always an issue of power, not just of religion, it's just that in this case the two sides were also divided by religion. If James I and the Parliament were blown to smithereens, then the Catholics could have an open door to power, the monarchy and the control of Parliament. Yes, it was indeed controlled by religion, but it's also, as always, an issue of power.
