This is a question you need to ask your doctor's office or your local pharmist. Also, if you are at the store and look at products you can read the package and it often says NOT FOR PREGNANT or NURSING mothers.
It is very common to be constipated while pregnant. Do some prevetive things to keep your bowels moving. Take a brisk walk ever day. Eat an apple everyday. Drink More water.
Cut back on foods that constipate you like cheese.
Eat plenty of vegtables and fruit. Remember you are growing a whole new person within you. It is awsome.

Metamucil is the safest, most effective relief for contispation. I've suffered from it for most of my life and it got worse with pregnancy. Just down the 1 tablespoon in 8 ounces of water. Then, drink more water. It's the easiest solution other than trying to change your diet to include more fiber.
Good luck. I know it's uncomfortable. If it lasts too long, like more than 5 days, or you get a fever, goto the emergency room. It might seem ebarrassing, but they see it all the time.
Btw: Milk of magnesia is fine, but my doctor told me, and so did the pharmacist, that using it too much is not safe. It can cause high levels of magnesium in your system which is not good.

I had this too and my doctor told me to take milk of magnesia to help with constipation. It didn't help much but you can take it . I learned throughout my pregnancy to drink a cup of coffee as it is a stimulant and it will help you go to the bathroom and yes, I asked my doctor about this and she said it was fine.

stool softeners work, but try metamucil or another fiber additive that you can just stir into your food, more fruits and veggies and lots of water. Taking a daily walk also helps keep things moving.

Stool softeners, without any laxatives in them are best. Be sure to avoid the laxatives for you and baby. But simple stool softeners ( I used "phillips brand) worked perfect for me pregnant. It took about 2 days.
