Make sure you book at least a hotel for your first night, because if you haven't booked you flight, out of experience I know it going to be hassle. Depending on where you're flying from, you'll be dealing with jet lag and you usually just want a shower and some food and hit the bed when arriving late.
Amsterdam itself has a lot of options to go see.
The Rijksmuseum has a great selection of the dutch history art and so does the van Gogh museum.
Tram line 5 will take you from central station to the museum district.
Early October can quite chilly already, especially at night, so be prepared.
Leidseplein, where the same tram stops, has great bars and restaurants. Check out boom Chicago if you like improvisation theater ( all in English).
What I do like is a small sushi restaurant at the turfsteeg, in between spui and Rokin,go right at the H&M there at a very small street, good prices andexcellent sushi.
Amsterdam has a great zoo to be checked too.
The city of Haarlem is worth visiting too, nice shopping, take the train there, it's only a 10 minute ride and take bus 73 or 75 from there at the back of the bus station, that one will take you there.
From Haarlem it's a short train ride to go to Zandvoort beach, nice for a walk and a drink and they have nice hotels there so you go stay overnight.
Take also a visit to Alkmaar, again very easy by train. across the railways station of Amsterdam Central is a toutrist info, they can get you 3 day public transport passes, far cheaper than buy singles all the time.
A good website for cheap hotel rates will be listed below.
Have fun and enjoy, I love the city.

October can cold and wet, dress accordingly.
Visit Ann Franks house, take a canal boat tour, visit the world famous museums, the Red Light district (it's safe and fun), and the coffee houses.
No offense, but why in the world would anyone go to Amsterdam for a honeymoon? Don't get me wrong, I love the city and will be visiting next year for the 4th time. However nothing about Amsterdam says "honeymoon".

I lived in Amsterdam as a kid. I tis a great place. Do not be afraid of waiting to the last miute to get a bargain. Look at the flights originating in Europe, dutch flights like KLM and British Airways uses Amsterdam as a hub as do a lot of european airlines. It is a hug international airport. Amsterdam is cosmopolitan so don't worry about not speaking dutch. I would wait til I got there before find a hotel, but that is me. it is a small country with a lot of canals, you will be able to travel by bike over the bridges to see the city. Consider a day in Paris and Brussels.

Firstly, ignore the people saying stay away from Amsterdam, its your honeymoon. Not been for years but had a great time when i went with friends. I visited the Anne frank & van gogh museum but would have loved to have seen more but was only there for a weekend. And pay a visit the red light district, its an eye opener if anything. hope you have fun.

I would visit the Anne Frank Museum. I know, it's probably not a very romantic place to go on your honeymoon, but the holocaust was a tragedy that affected many people and it would be a good thing to do together - to remember - for the future of your possible future children what the world can do and how we can never let it happen again.
