My husband and I got married in 1996 and I found out that at the same time he was married in Mexico. How can I get a record of his marriage there? Why, do you ask? We are getting divorced, and he is trying to take our child and this information needs to surface. Please only serious suggestions and ideas. Thank you.

I am fairly certain about the city and state it was in. He has a kid there, too, that he has not seen in like 12 or 13 years.

The Registro Civil is the Mexican registry office where all marriages must be performed by law. You could get in touch with the main one in Mexico city but I think you can only get a copy of the marriage certificate by applying directly to the registry office in the town where he was married (each office deals with their own paperwork). So if you know where he was married they may be able to help. Good luck.

Unless you know in what town he got married, it's going to be difficult. Keep in mind that there are a lot of fake documents in Mexico. It's quite common for people to have different birth certificates with different dates and names.

Question: are you getting divorce in the states? Because if you are, he can't take the child. There are other things at your disposal, however they depend on your information too.

Contact the American Consulate office in Mexico. They may be able to point you in the right direction.
