a car seat and clothing and a bouncey chair besides this they don;t need much for the first while i am sure your family/friends will get a few little toys that your baby can use to learn to grasp things but they really don;t need much at the start besides your time and affection (and formula if you choose to go that way ) maybe some diapers lol

Here is a checklist for you, I just had a baby 6 weeks ago and these are the must haves for me.
-diapers (newborn and size 1, about 40-50 a week or more)
-wipes (about a 70 pack per week or more)
-diaper rash ointment
-baby soap/shampoo/cream (you can bathe in the kitchen sink to save some cash, just be very careful and a helping hand is always nice)
-2 baby wash clothes (bare minimum)
-8+ bottles (backup in case breastfeeding doesn't work out)
-formula (1 can lasts about a week for a newborn)
-receiving blankets (10-12)
-2 blankets
-a crib
-crib sheets (2-3) (crib bedding is not a must have)
-8-10 newborn sleepers/8-10 0-3 month sleepers
-8-10 newborn onesies/8-10 0-3 month onesies
-2 hats
-2 pairs of mitts (for cold or scratching reasons)
-carseat (they come in newborn or convertable)
-2 soothers (if you plan to use them)
Also if you can make a baby registry with things mostly that you cannot afford and have a relative throw you a baby shower, that may help to. Babies R Us you can do online.
I do know though some form of entertainment for your newborn you may want to save for, like a swing or bouncy chair. My son can't live without constant movement, so if you don't want to be carrying around your infant at all times if he has this issue, then something that moves is a must have. Rattles and such you baby won't be able to use for many weeks to come. So just get what is the bare minimum, and save up for what extras you may run into that is needed.......hope this helps.....
P.S. If you have a washer and dryer at home, less clothing is needed, but if you have to go to a laundry mat, then double up cause some babies tend to be messy, try a consignment store for cheap used baby clothes......

You can getalot at thrift stores and garage sales. Craigslist is also great for used funiture.
The most important thing to get new is a carseat.
Aside from that, you don't need much. You can make a sling pretty inexpensivly and that will keep the baby happy and entertained better than any bouncy seat or swing.
Also, very important, go to a used book store (or half.com) and get a good breastfeeding book. "the womanly art" and "the breastfeeding book" are good choices. Join an online support group (i can reccomend one on myspace) and read as much as you can on the subject (www.kellymom.com and www.askdrsears.com are both great sites) You will save so much time and money by being dedicated, determined and prepared for breastfeeding. Formula is super-expensive, not to mention bottles and nipples and all the junk that goes with it.
The natural style of parenting is really very cheap... you dont even need a crib! I didnt get one until my son was about 7 months.

If you have a car, you need a carseat. If you have 2 cars, you can get one carseat with 2 bases for infants.
You need something for the baby to sleep in (bassinet, crib, etc). If you only want to buy one thing, go with a full-size crib so the baby won't outgrow it.
You'll probably want a stroller. If you get one of those travel system thingees, this can be combined with the carseat.
Other than that, it's going to depend on your lifestyle. You don't really need a changing table, wipe warmer, etc. You may want a Snugli (carrier) or a swing. You won't need a high chair until baby is old enough to sit up.
Oh, and if you join your local area Freecycle group (www.freecycle.org) you can probably get a lot of what you need free.
Good luck!

As long as your house is warm, clean and full of love, your baby will be fine. Don't get caught up in buying all the acessories that are out there. A cot, a good car seat if you've got a car, a basic pram, and enough blankets bedding and babygrows to be going on with. Once you start going to parent and baby groups you will make friends with other mums and be able to swap things you don't need any more for things you do. Mums are like that! Good luck!

In the first couple of weeks, your baby is basically going to just eat, sleep, and pee/poop. So as long as you have the things you need for this, you'll be fine. The baby can sleep in many places as long as you make them safe.
Don't buy too many newborn diapers because they grow out of them very fast and remember, if you breast feed it is free and the very best for your baby! You won't need bottles, all the parts that go along with bottles, and formula. It will save you several hundred dollars a month!
Good luck! You'll love your little one sooo much that you'll work through any tough time!

Just to let you no, i am not a mom i am 14, but i do have a lot of experience baby sitting babys. First you have to have a car seat, and you need to put it in properly if you drive and you will also need to have at least three boddles i would say in case 1 is dirty and if you are using one and if you are going to be like some moms and put them in the fridge so they will be cold. (that is optional.) Also you will need pleanty of diapars because a baby uses probably around 7-11 a day it really depends. Also you will need to go to a dollar store or wal-mart to get wet wipes i think that the best are probably pampers baby wipes. also you could get a pasafire so the baby can suck on , but just to let you know that once a baby starts with it, it is very hard for them to stop. Also you will need to get them powder, probably a simple not heavy powder, i suppose. you will also need to get baby food and a lot of it, once he/she can eat it. Probably the best type of baby food is mushed up carrots or peas or squash or any type of mushed up fruit that you thing will be good for him or her. and those are some of the basic items needed for a baby. You could also get them so toys for them to play with but nothing too small that they can choke on. also when they start to get theething you will need toget them a teething ring and it helps take away the pain if you put it in the fridge and let it get cold over night.
P.S. i hop that this information helps you a lot in the parenting world and i hope that you get the cutest bundle of joy that you could ever want or wish for.
Sincerly, Whitney...

Money was tight for us too, so we never bought a crib she slept in a play pen until she was about 18 months then wend to a toddler bed. Also if you can find a place that buys and sells used baby clothes and furniture you can find things really cheap. Rummage sales are great too. Since children grow so fast they dont usually don't wear out clothes before they out grow them. I had my first child at 17 and I had to do it alone, so I had to use things like WIC (women infants and children). They help with things like formula and baby cereal. There are a lot of programs out there that can help out in many ways from food for the family to rent to baby clothes. Talk to the social services dept in your town and they can get you in touch with a lot of different people.
Hope that helps and congrats.

Other than the obvious, I couldn't live without a bouncy seat. Only buy essentials at first as far as clothes, diapers, bedding, etc. goes until after the baby is born. Its easier to see then what you truly need and can live without. Good luck. Shop consignment shops and yard sales.
