Look in your owner's manual and find what oil is recommended for your car. Very often they will recommend a brand as well.
That is the one you should use.

I could pick brands as well as any of the others have and give you a half-dozen reasons why not to use others, But I won't. Synthetics are better at holding up to thermal breakdown. Synthetics will not protect against contaminates any better than conventional oils. The key in selecting the oil you should use Is The Owners Manual! Use the grade of oil that they recommend (usually 5W-30 or 10W-30).. What is more important than Brand, is the frequency of oils changes. No oil can be any good if a good oil change schedule is not followed. In city driving 1500 to 2000 miles would not be unreasonable.. a lot of highway driving could see 2500 to 3000 miles between changes and not be unreasonable. Synthetics could add about 1000 miles to either for these. Yes they claim to last longer but the oil and filter will still handle only so much contamination even though there is no thermal breakdown. BTW, I have used Penzoil in my 1988 Cavalier since the day I bought it brand new and had the engine apart after 130,000 miles to replace the lifters and the inside of the engine was as clean as the day it was made, I changed the oil every 2500 miles. I am now at 276,000 miles and continue to use Penzoil.

I recommend Mobil 1 synthetic. Use whatever grade your owners' manual recommends (they make 5w-30, 10w-30, and 15w-50 that I know of)
I change oil and filter every 10k with the Mobil 1. If you already have an older engine that is loose and has some blow-by, you will need to change more often as the oil will get contaminated more quickly.
I recommend staying away from the regular Fram filters. I've seen some filter comparisons and they're not very good (the more expensive Fram ToughGard filters are OK though)- Wix and Purolater usually come out on top. Believe it or not, the SuperTech filters from WalMart are better than the Fram ones. I THINK they're made by Wix.

Use Mobil 1. There are other synthetic oils also. Be careful though as some are "hybrid" oils that are a mix of synthetic and regular oil. Synthetic oils last much longer and don't break down as easily as natural oils. You can extend your oil changes from 3000 miles to 6000 miles with synthetic. That helps compensate for the extra price. Many synthetic oils recommend a 10-15 thousand mile oil change. I change mine every 6-7 thousand miles. By the way, my 92 Buick has 225,000 miles on it.

Any name brand oil is pretty much as good as another. Synthetic works great if your motor runs hot or if your in a very cold climate. Other then that the biggest difference is how often you change the oil, and use the proper viscosity.
I had a 350 chevy that had 250000 miles when it was pulled from the last car it ran in, and it probaly could of gone another 50000 easy, but I and everybody else who I gave the motor too changed the oil religously. When I dissassembled the motor the bearings were in great condition but the cylinders were wore pretty bad.

Synthetic oils are the best. For most cars changing the oil often is more important than the oil type. Use name brand oil and a high quality filter (Wix, Bosch, some OEMS). Don't neglect the other fluids either (coolant, brake fluid, transmission or clutch system). Changing them every couple of years will same you money when your cars gets a little older (150k miles). Use which ever weight your car manual says to use. Example 10W30, 20W50, etc. I would stay away from the really cheap brands. Other than that, they are all pretty much the same. The most important thing to do though is regular changes. You could buy the most expensive brand there is, but if you do not change the oil often then it won't do any good.

Synthetic oil is the best. As for a brand, I would recommend REDLINE..you can check out their website and read all about their product(s) at www.redlineoil.com ....costs more than other synthetics, but reduces sludge and even that milky look that some oils cause.

Mobil 1 Full Synthetic is the best, and can be found at almost any quick-lube place. Royal Purple is another good one, but you usually have to order that yourself.
