He was creative and a non-conformist. He did not believe in dogma unlike so many of his peers. Even though is mathematical skills were not on par with Max Planck and others, he was able to bring new ideas to problems and solve them in unique ways.
Since he was a patent clerk in Switzerland, he was able to review a lot of other people's ideas. Also, it was a desk job so he had time to think and ponder the greater questions.

Nothing more than the fact that his ideas were relevant and useful to the powers that be at the time he documented them.
There are lots of great thinkers, such as William James Sidis, Thomas Henry Moray, who's works are cast into the sea because they aren't useful to the interests of leadership and money.

The fear of being alone. Most humans fear being alone and begin to think. The more one things, the more likely they are to have thoughts on the order of people like Einstein.
His intelligence, I think, is based on the type of thinking that he did.
His autism, is loosely translated as someone who interacts with their self inside their mind, rather than with the rest of us in the outside world.

There was some part of his mind that was completely free. (from all things)
That small free part, let him see things in a new clean light.
He was probably more human than anyone, so far in all of human history.
To be able to even ponder, on the infinite possibilities in the universe, in all the infinite realities!!!
