At sports events, signs that say "John 3:16" refer to the Bible passage: "And God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, so that all who believed in him would not perish, but would have eternal life." (paraphrased)

It's a short-and-sweet way to announce your Christianity, or to shove it in other people's faces. Your pick. ;) I doubt it's the most effective form of evangelism out there, but on the bright side, at least the sign isn't an advertisement for Nike or McDonald's. ;)

You may mean a sign John 3:16, which is a Biblical scripture. It is done by fans who want to carry the words from the Bible to sporting events nationwide.

That is for John 3:16..

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Why this is displayed at sporting events is a whole 'nuther question!
