Erm...I'm talking as someone who started wearing contact lenses at the age of 18 and I'm now 45 so feel you should at least take note of my advice. I started with hard lenses and when soft came out, moved to permanent soft...ie one pair lasted "forever" if cleaned and maintained. How things have moved on! To cut a long story short, with soft monthly lenses, I almost lost my left eye in 1987. Even though I thoroughly cleaned them, a bacteria was still left on the lens long enough to infect the material at the back of my eye that held the eye in place. It's apparantly called cellulitus (which many footballers suffer from in their knees). Believe me, it's much more painful if it's in your eye. I ended up being rushed to hospital and having antibiotics injected directly into my eye to save it. By then, the pain was beyond having the injection and the injection was actually rather soothing, once the clamps were off and the nurse got off the top of me! Long story!
I swapped to daily disposables for a further 10 years....no cleaning involved therefore less risk of chemical reaction or infection. Started afresh every day. It worked for me until exactly 10 years to the day of my first trauma, my right eye started showing symptons. I recognised them immediately and went straight to a specialist eye hospital. The diagnosis was that I could never wear lenses permanently again. But you have to read why before you decide....

The first cellutitus, obviously caused by monthlies therefore less cleaning, caused a "dormant" infection, ie, it never goes away, it's just waiting for a jolt to wake up again. And stress is the main factor in waking it up. 10 yrs laters, my father died, stress caused it to flare again but in my left eye, even though I was wearing daily disposables. By then, the deep damage had been done and I was just thankful to be told I could STILL SEE but I should never wear any type of lens permanently again. I can still wear them but only very infrequently (like for a special occasion) and only for 6hrs max by which time I can feel my eyes start to burn anyway. I wont bore you with the whole medical breakdown but it's all to do with a lack of oxygen to the eye and blood vessels therefore making their way to the surface to try and get more oxygen. Trouble is when they get that extra oxygen, the blood vessels don't just go back into the place from whence they came. So imagine a relief map of ups and downs never erased, just left at the last worst place you left it. A zig zaggy line towards the surface of your eye, that never levels out or goes back. The worst zig and zag is still left where it was just waiting for the next encouragement to come along and get it working towards the surface of your eye again!

So now, I still get daily disposables, but my last pack of 30 lasted 6 years! I wore them to a few weddings, but mostly every 3 months for 2 hours whilst I coloured my hair...so I could see around the sides (which I couldn't do with my glasses on)!.
So 10 yrs ago, I resigned myself to the fact that I'd have to wear glasses (which have since become much more acceptable, sexy and glam).
I've just gone back last month for another eye test and eye health check and am told, the situ remains the same. The past damage is still evident and again they only prescribe 30 daily ones on the basis they will last me for the next few years (ie, wearing them infrequently and for a short time). They now trust me enough to know I'm not stupid or vain enough to risk my sight again!
SO.....from one who knows.....the less time you have lenses in your eyes, with no chemicals involved, the safer your eyes will be. So I'd recommend daily disposables every time...as long as your optician says they're ok for you. But if you EVER feel any burning sensation or discomfort, take them out and get a check up. And for god's sake, make sure you get an eye health and eye sight test every year at least.

Use a reputable optician (not a conveyer belt type one who will just tell you what you want to hear to make a sale).

You truly don't know how much you take your sight for granted and how much you can risk it with anything foreign in it....and the longer the foreigner is there, the bigger the risk...especially as you have to then use chemicals to clean that foreigner, which there MUST be a residue of and you then you put back in your eye.
Best advice is get sexy specs. Next is use daily disposables but sensibly. I can honestly say I wouldn't promote monthlies to anyone...........especially the type they say you can sleep in!
Waking up with eyes dried and shut tight is NOT a pleasant experience......the reality of losing your eyesight even less.
End of lecture! Hope it's helped!
PS - Just read other answers re monthlies being cheaper....yes they are initially but add in the cost of cleansers....BUT more importantly, dailies are more expensive but how much do you value your sight? Dailies are much less likely to infect you in the long term. Sadly, you don't know how much you WOULD be willing to pay until the damage has been done. To me, the extra money towards dailies is well worth the reduction in risk. You don't want to end up with eyes like mine.....and saying "if only I'd...."

I have to disagree with the last answer - I think dailies are MUCH more comfortable and convenient, although yes, they are more expensive. You don't have to clean them everyday, you just get a fresh pair every morning and can wear them all day long. Since you have to take them out every night and put them back in again every morning, wouldn't you rather have a nice, clean, fresh pair everytime than one you have to clean before you go to bed? They never get clean enough and stuff builds up on the monthlies, no matter how hard you try to keep them in pristine condition. If money is not a big factor, i highly recommend the dailies versus monthly or weeklies. Focus Dailies are great and soooo easy to use!

The optometrist should have samples of ALL the types for you to try.

I like the weekly disposables best. (Though I cannot wear contacts anymore because my eyes were growing extra arteries to compensate from the lack of air exposure).

My gf likes the monthly disposables that you can leave in 24-7.

I'd go with the monthly pairs. They last for the entire month with perfect comfort and durability, and plus aren't as expensive as having to buy a pair for every different day. Why would you want to do that? <3

i use both, monthlies as my regular ones and daily ones for on holiday, nights away etc. and find the daily ones slightly comfier as they are thiner but stick to monthlies due to cost. after reading the reply below by nephrine i'm now thinking of using daily ones all the time now!

dailies are most comfortable and convenient but they can be expensive in the long run.

monthlies are made to last longer so of course they're more robust than dailies. however, make sure you take very good cae of them. it only takes a little work to keep your eyes healthy, but if you fail to do it there will be consequences!
