I read on AOL news a small town ( I forget where) made it mandatory for adults without a criminal or mental record to own guns in 1980s. Ever since crime has been at a record low.
Should owning guns be mandatory. I know if i wanted to rob someone i would think twice if i knew they had a gun. What do you think???

Well, there are two major schools of thought.

First, the school yard argument - which is, even the puniest person is equal if they have a gun.

The second, more deaths occur from fatal ACCIDENTS if people are armed. Also, NOT everyone is going to have one, and in the heat of passion there are more deaths because a tool is close at hand to deal out death.

I don't want a gun. Instead of blocking a punch I'd get hit while I was trying to draw. And I worked the graveyard shift in security - about once a month someone would come in at 3 am or so and scare the sh!t out of me - I woulda shot him!

I hate to say it, but I think a TOTAL ban would be best... however, the US Constitution gives us the right, as the founders knew that the government would be less likely to become tyrannical towards the people if they knew the people were well-armed and wouldn't stand for injustices.

no gun owner ship should not be mandatory.
it should be a choice of the individual to bear arms.
however there should be way stricter limitations on who can purchase a gun and who cannot.
there should be the same level of phycological profiling done for some one who want to own a gun as someone who wants to become a cop .
buying a gun should not be as easy as going to a gun show flashing a drivers liscence and leaving.
or filling out a form with no other follow ups.
it should also require taking a course on how to use a hand gun and proper storage and other things.
however
owning and bearing arms should be a choice.
it is a persons right to be pacifist and not own a gun.
that small town everyone has a gun theory is not a good example.
its a small town. what did the murder rate go from one every ten years to one every twelve years.
most people do not have it in them to kill another human being. people like to assume that taking someones life is as easy as pulling a trigger. it can be but do you realy think most people are killers and could and would be able to kill someone effectively with a hand gun.
the flaw of this whole theory is people who are criminals are going to commit crimes and they would be more likely to kill you and then rob you if everyone owned a gun.
alot of people have this illusion it would be just like the old west . i can assure you it would not be.

There are lots of ways to kill people, guns just make it easier. I think all the gun manufacturers (i.e. The United States is by far the largest exporter of weapons in the world) would really enjoy the model of ridiculousness set by that town. If you are going to rob someone, having a gun would help you. I just worry about all those irresponsible gun owners, and how they feel when their child shoots themselves or someone else. So stupid.

I would think twice about walking down the street if I knew everyone around me had a gun. I am not against guns, but def do not believe that everyone needs one. There are some crazy people out there and you have to be smart and responsible to own a gun....which Is why i do.

That wouldn't solve anything and would just add to the problem. You'd just have more psychos carrying guns and more innocent people would be caught in a crossfire if a gun battle broke out. A determined killer would find a way to kill you with or without you carrying a gun.

No, then we have a mad max reality. We all then become gun-toting bad asses, rather than reasoning human beings. Fear of mutually assured destruction is not the path to peace. Only understanding is. Owning a gun won't add to your understanding and it won't protect you either, because in you gun battle at your school w/Shooter the ricochets will kill people - more people in crowded place doesn't mix well with MORE guns.

no, not at all. Some people don't like them. I just don't want their dislike to dictate my ability to own one.

A gun in the hands of someone who is afraid will be much more likely to injure the shooter or an innocent bystander.

The proper use of a firearm requires training and continued practice.

Well if they made the law, but never really enforced it, that would sure make criminals think twice.

States that allow open carry or concealed have lower crime rates as well.

No way. I can think of plenty of people who I would not want to be forced to carry guns.
Interesting premise, but gun ownership should be voluntary.
