Penguin bio wheels seem to be very popular and reliable. I only have one of them but it seems to get the job done.

I have a penguin 150 bio-wheel it is great!!! for a fifteen gallon get the 20 or 30 it depends on your fishes waste output and the number of fish you gave if you have the high numbers of these things get the 30 even if you want that extra push of power get the 30 it has a big bio-wheel for more benifitial bacteria. Bio wheels are the best but if you ever up grade the emporers there chosen as the best power filter in a international surrvey (the penguins were#2 and aqua clear in third).

Emperor is a great filter, the higher end model of Marineland, the Penguin is a step down.

AquaClears are easy to clean and some of them have the bio-wheels as well. They are usually a little cheaper.

You want to have at least a 10x flow rate in gph as your tank holds. So A Emporer 400 is good for a 40 gallon. An AquaClear 100 is actually only good for a 50 gallon.

What size tank do you have? It would help with recommendations.

I will be getting a second Emperor 400 for my 55 with a single Oscar in it. The second filter right now is an Aqua-Tech 60 (Wal-Mart contracted filter from Marineland ... Emperor > Penguin > Aqua-Tech)

Canister filters are the best, but more expensive.

While others may not agree, I like Hagen Aquaclear the best, then Tetra Whisper.
The BEST bio filter is an undergravel filter. The question is are you prepared to do the maintenance it requires? If not, it will soon become a fish killer. UGF's are great, but not for everyone.

Get a Penguin or BakPak filter.

Penguin filters are the smaller version of the Emporer and both are made by Marineland. If you only have a 15 gal tank, an Emporer filter would be unnecessarily large.
