Macintosh systems use a series of buttons to take screenshots. The most unusual button is the Command, or Apple button.
This button has a small apple and/or interwoven loop on it. To take a screen shot of the entire desktop, press and hold the Command, Shift and the number 3 buttons.
The computer should respond with a sound similar to a camera shutter to signal that the picture has been taken. The computer will then place the picture in the system hard drive folder as a generic icon with colored shapes and the title "Picture" followed by a number. Each screen shot will be numbered sequentially.

Shortcuts for taking pictures of the screen
You can use keyboard shortcuts to take pictures of the screen in Mac OS X.
To take a picture of the whole screen, press Command-Shift-3.
To take a picture of part of the screen, press Command-Shift-4, then drag to select the area you want in the picture.
To take a picture of a window, the menu bar, the Dock, or other area, press Command-Shift-4, then press the Space bar. Move the pointer over the area you want so that it's highlighted, then click. If you decide you want to drag to select the area, press the Space bar again.
If you press Command-Shift-4 and decide you don't want to take the screen shot, press the Escape key.
Screen shots are saved as files on the desktop. If you want to put the screen shot in the Clipboard, rather than create a file, hold down the Control key when you press the other keys. You can then paste the picture into a document.
You can also take pictures of the screen using the Grab application (in the Utilities folder).
Some applications, such as DVD Player, may not let you take pictures of the screen.

Instructions here.
Taking A Screen-Shot
A screen shot is a PICT image capture of your Mac's screen.
You can take a screen shot just about any time you want --
if you see something you want to save, or want to be able to
show your Mac's screen to someone else, this feature can
come in very handy!
You can take a screen shot by pressing the Command, Shift,
and 3 keys all at once. You'll hear the sound of a camera
shutter, that means your screen shot has been created! You
can find the screen shot in the main level of your hard drive.
It will be called "Picture 1," screen shots you take after that
will be numbered sequentially: Picture 2, Picture 3, etc.
Screen shots are saved in PICT format. You can open them
with SimpleText, AOL, or any graphic editor..
