Well apparantly the Dell answer is more popular than the first person thought. If you just want a basic computer, Dell is pretty much the best choice, HP is good but is more expensive on average, Gateway is not that impressive in terms of quality, but are not terrible either.
Now if you are looking for fully customizable, down to every small feature, go here:http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/ this site offers fully customizeable computers at decent prices.

Well, I think you should start by reading the excellent article
signed by Mr Cade Metz--the renowned IT expert from PC
Magazine.
"Whose PCs and printers are the most reliable? Who offers the
best support when things go wrong—and the best repairs when
things go really wrong? For the answers—and much more--,
dive into our 19th Annual Reader Satisfaction Survey."
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2006491,00.asp
Please click on "Desktop Survey". (A computer means more that
hardware. The post-sale Service/Support is quite important, too.)
You will be very surprised to find out that the so-called "best PCs"
are manufactured by APPLE and SONY--according to PC Mag's
criteria.
My advice is to choose an APPLE machine--on which you can
run either the Mac OS, either Linux, either Windows.

Hewlett Packard is highly recommend by most, well for me anyways, but you can customize your own computer. There are 3 different categories to choose from so you will have the performance you are looking for. Check it out at http://www.hp.com . There is a list of products in different categories for what they carry on the homepage. Good luck!
Oh, by the way, sorry but I personally think Dell's suck, I have heard to many bad things about them from friends and family who have bought them, which is why I prefer HP. Just letting you know in advance.

Dell
I've bought many Dell's over the years for our company. I never buy one of their standard systems. I always have custom computers built. I have always been satisfied.
I start with one of their standard computers that is close to what I want, then start to customize. But beware, you will have a very expensive PC if you do not choose wisely.

This won't be a popular answer, but I think the Dell website does a great job of this. I buy many Dells a year, customized the way we want them and they work fine, year after year.
