I put down stuff that was supposed to kill it before it grew, but it didn't work. Any suggestions on something that has worked for you?

While it's dying-- be sure and get every strand with seeds on it-- and put them in the trash! You can kill the plant but you have to remove the seeds.-- then when you dig or turn the dirt-- more seeds will appear.... it's an ongoing battle .
Plus, if your mower has mowed crabgrass-- it needs to be washed throughly before mowing your grass again.
good luck

You have to keep buying pre-emergence crabgrass killer and putting it down in early spring before crabgrass seeds sprout. it is pricey but very effective. You probably did not put enough down or did it too late or did not stick with the program.

From your home improvement store, purchase the granular "weed and feed" that is specific to killing crabgrass and a spreader- it will make your lawn greener and get rid of crabgrass. The local Lowe's will know best what to do in YOUR area :) We got rid of ours this year with Scott's Weed & Feed granular spread. Good luck!

If you don't mind using chemicals that is the way to go, other wise you must spend long hours, taking out every piece, all the way down. It will grow back from each joint. I have removed mine, and I don't have any left. Keep at it and do it very thoroughly. It's best putting the powder on as it is going dormant, because then you water then it is carried all the way down to the roots.
